Learn how MCServerHost Snapshots work, how they differ from backups, and how to create, manage, and restore them safely.
Understanding how to preserve and manage your servers state using snapshots is essential for any server administrator. This guide covers everything you need to know about using snapshots effectively through your MCServerHost panel.
What are Snapshots?
Snapshots are instantaneous point-in-time copies of your server's files on MCServerHost. They preserve your worlds, configurations, plugins, and other server data exactly as they exist when the snapshot is created. Snapshots can be used with any server, including newly created servers, making it easy to preserve or restore server data when needed.
What are they used for?
- Restore your server: Revert your server files to a previous point in time.
- Protect important changes: Create a snapshot before making major changes to your server.
- Recover lost data: Restore files, worlds, configurations, and other server data when needed.
- Transfer server data: Use snapshots with other servers, including newly created servers.
Snapshots vs. Backups
While both Snapshots and Backups help protect your server data, they work differently.
- Backups are tied to a specific server and are intended to keep a copy of that server's data for recovery.
- Snapshots are point-in-time copies of your server files that can be used across servers, including newly created servers. This makes Snapshots useful not only for restoring data, but also for transferring server files between servers.
Creating a Snapshot
Creating a Snapshot is a quick way to save the current state of your server files before making changes.
- Navigate to your server's Snapshots section in the MCServerHost panel.

- Click Take a Snapshot

- Enter a name for your Snapshot if required.
- Optionally, you can exclude any files or folders from the Snapshot by entering their names.
- Confirm the creation.

- Wait for the Snapshot to finish creating before making any changes to your server.
Restoring a Snapshot
On an Existing Server
To restore a Snapshot on an existing server:
- Open the Snapshots section in your MCServerHost panel.
- Find the Snapshot you want to restore.
- Click Restore next to the Snapshot.

- Review the restoration details and make sure you have selected the correct Snapshot.
- Confirm the restoration.

- Wait for the restoration process to complete.
- Once finished, your server files will be restored to the state captured by the selected Snapshot.
Important: Restoring a Snapshot will overwrite your server's current files. Make sure you select the correct Snapshot before confirming.
On a New Server
To use a Snapshot when creating a new server:
- Start the server creation process from the MCServerHost panel.
- Configure the new server as you normally would.
- In the Minecraft Version section, select Start from one of my snapshots.

- Select the Snapshot you want to use for your new server.

- Review your server settings and make sure the correct Snapshot is selected.
- Create your server and wait for the setup process to finish.
- Once completed, your new server will contain the files from the selected Snapshot.
Things to keep in mind
- Restoring a Snapshot will overwrite existing files, so make sure you select the correct Snapshot before restoring it.
- Excluded files and folders will not be included in the Snapshot.
- Make sure the Snapshot has finished creating before relying on it for recovery.
- Keep important Snapshots available if you may need to restore or transfer your server later.
