Learn how to configure GriefPrevention to protect builds, prevent griefing, and manage land claims.
Protecting your players' builds from griefers and theft is one of the most important parts of running a successful multiplayer server. GriefPrevention is one of the most popular, intuitive, and lag-free land-claiming plugins available. This guide will show you how to install and set it up on your MCServerHost server.
Install GriefPrevention
GriefPrevention works straight out of the box with zero complex configuration required for basic setups.
- Ensure your server is running a plugin-compatible software like Paper, Spigot, or Purpur.
- Download the latest version of GriefPrevention

- Upload the downloaded GriefPrevention
.jarfile into thepluginsfolder.
- On the top left click "Restart" or "Start" server to load the plugin and generate its configuration files.

Give Out Claim Shovel
GriefPrevention uses a golden shovel as the primary tool for claiming land, paired with a stick for inspecting claims.
- Join your server. Players automatically receive a golden shovel and claiming blocks when they join, or you can give yourself one:
/give @p golden_shovel 1
- Right-click two opposite corners of the area you want to claim.
Manage Claim Trust Levels
Once a player has created a claim, they can share access with friends using simple trust commands:
- Give someone full access to build, open chests, and use buttons/doors:
/trust PlayerName
- Give container/chest access only (no building):
/containertrust PlayerName
- Give permission to use buttons, levers, and doors only:
/accessrust PlayerName
- Remove all permissions from a player:
/untrust PlayerName
Core Configuration (Optional)
If you want to tweak claim blocks earned over time or adjust explosion settings:
- Open your File Manager and navigate to
plugins/GriefPreventionData/config.yml.
- Edit settings like claim block accrual rates, PvP rules, or creeper damage depending on your server's gameplay style.
- Save changes and run
/gpreloadin your console to apply them.
You've reached the end of this tutorial! By now, your land claim system is fully active and ready to protect your players. Grab your friends and enjoy your newly secured server! (:
