Learn how to protect your Minecraft server from common security threats and keep your server safe.
Keeping your Minecraft server secure from griefers, hackers, and malicious actors is essential for a healthy community. Following a few foundational security practices can protect your server files, economy, and players.
Avoid Unverified or "Cracked" Plugins
- The Risk: Downloading plugins from sketchy, unverified sites or using leaked/cracked premium plugins is the #1 way servers get backdoored or infected with malware.
- The Fix: Always download your plugins from official, trusted sources like SpigotMC, Modrinth, or GitHub (Check the source code). Never run .jar files sent by random users or untrusted websites.
Never Give OP to Untrusted Players
- The Risk: Server operators (/op) have absolute control over your server, including world editing, and console commands. Giving OP to the wrong person can result in your server being instantly deleted or griefed.
- The Fix: Only give OP to trusted co-owners or admin staff. For other staff members, use a permission manager plugin like LuckPerms to assign specific, limited commands instead.
Keep Your Whitelist Enabled
- The Risk: Leaving your server completely open to the public allows griefers and bots to join instantly without restriction.
- The Fix: If you are running a private community or playing with friends, enable your server's whitelist to control exactly who has access. Go to your console and run:
whitelist on
and
whitelist add <username>
Install AuthMe for Cracked (Offline Mode) Servers
- The Risk: If your server runs with online-mode=false to support cracked (offline) launchers, anyone can join using any player's exact username (including your admins), bypassing security and stealing accounts.
- The Fix: Install the AuthMeReloaded plugin. This forces players using offline/cracked accounts to register and log in with a secure password every time they join, completely protecting player accounts from impersonation.
You've reached the end of this tutorial! By following these security steps, your server will be guarded against common exploits and griefers. Grab your friends and enjoy a safe, secure gameplay experience! (:
