How to Give Yourself Admin Rights (OP) on Your Minecraft Server

When starting a new Minecraft server, the first thing you want to do is give yourself admin rights (commonly known as OP). With it, you gain access to every single in-game command. Whether you need it on a creative server to build amazing things or to manage your survival world, having OP on your server is an absolute must.

What is an Operator (OP)?

An Operator is a player with administrative permissions on a server. By default, new players do not have access to admin commands. Once granted OP status, you gain access to commands like /gamemode, /tp, /kick, /ban, and plugin management commands.

How to OP Yourself Using the Console

Since you cannot grant yourself admin permissions from inside the game without already having them, you must use the server console.

  1. Log in to your MCServerHost dashboard and select your server.
  2. Go to the Console tab in the sidebar menu.
  3. In the command input field at the bottom of the console, type:

op YourUsername

(Replace YourUsername with your actual Minecraft username. Do not include a leading slash / in the server console).

  1. Press Enter. You should see a console confirmation stating: Made [YourUsername] a server operator.

If you are currently logged into the game, you will also see a message in chat confirming that you are now an operator.

How to Remove OP Status (De-OP)

If you ever need to revoke OP rights from yourself or another player, simply run the following command in the console (or in-game if you are already an OP):

deop YourUsername

Conclusion

Giving yourself OP status is the quickest way to gain full control over your Minecraft world and manage your server. Be careful about who you grant OP status to, as operators have full control over server commands and settings!
