How to Fix High Ping on a Minecraft Server

Learn how to diagnose and troubleshoot high ping on your Minecraft server.
High ping (latency) can make your Minecraft server feel sluggish, causing rubberbanding, delayed block breaking, and frustrating gameplay. Diagnosing whether the issue is coming from your network, your players' connections, or the server itself can help you fix it quickly.
Check Server TPS (Ticks Per Second) vs. Ping
- The Cause: Players often confuse server lag (low TPS) with network lag (high ping). If the server is overloaded, blocks will break with a delay even if your ping looks low.
- The Fix:
- Open your server console and run
/tps(if using Paper or Purpur). - If the TPS is below 18, your server is struggling with performance (heavy plugins, entities, or world generation), not network ping.
- Open your server console and run
Test Your Network Connection and Server Location
- The Cause: If your physical distance to the server data center is too far, or if your local internet connection is experiencing packet loss, your ping will naturally spike.
- The Fix:
- Open your computer's Command Prompt (Windows) or Terminal (Mac/Linux).
- Run a ping test to your server's IP address or your server node:
ping <server IP | node>- Check the response times (ms) and look for Request timed out messages, which indicate packet loss. If your local ping is high, try switching from Wi-Fi to a wired Ethernet connection.

Use Spark to Monitor Network Performance
- The Cause: Sometimes a specific plugin or network bottleneck causes continuous packet congestion.
- The Fix:
- Install the Spark performance profiling plugin via your MCServerHost dashboard.
- Run
/spark tpsor use its detailed profiling tools in your console to check if network threads are being bottlenecked by third-party plugins.
You've reached the end of this tutorial! By now, you know how to diagnose and isolate the root cause of high ping on your server. Grab your friends and enjoy a smooth, low-latency gameplay experience! (:
