Can't change my forge core of the server.

So.. I just tried to launch a modded server, got the mods, the version, hit start.. but it crashed. The console shown me that the forge core used in the server was outdated - so I tried just hijacking the internal files of the server to force an updated version of the forge. It didn't work - the server overwrote the files. Can anyone help?
